Rep Power: 15 | Hows about getting an online a gallery where people can post pictures of their favourite styles or their own shoes into either their own folder or into catagories? Obviously hard drive space could become a problem at some point, but I think it could be done. How much hard drive space is there to play with Jeff?

My Mood: Rep Power: 45 | Jeff will have to answer the one about storage space, but you can always start your own picture thread in the pictures forum. I agree you would have to to store your own pics elsewhere, but your thread would be available for many people to view and comment. Virgin Internet in the UK is very good for pic storage. You can sign up in 5 mins for an account with ftp and link to your pics easily. You are not supposed to serve off them but they probably wont find out and if they close it you can sign up for another one in 5 mins
I agree that it's not as good as pic storage here but image storage is very consuming on disc space. To give Jeff an idea, the X-drive experiment showed our users here could quickly upload 50-100 MB or more. I don't think we have that kind of space, but Jeff will no doubt be able to confirm it. |

Rep Power: 10 | I have been thinking of such features, bit in a somehow different manner. What I was thinking of, was providing an easy to use temporary storage place for pix which could then be linked to on the forum. Temporary, because this way the amount of diskspace used can easily be managed (pix would disapear automagically after, say a couple of weeks).
A personal gallery is ofcourse another nice option.
But the main issue here is indeed HD-space. At the moment we have 15 Meg. More HD space means paying more to the hosting provider.
There are a couple of options for this:
<ul>[*]Let some shoe-shops advertise here and use that income for extra HD-space and bandwidth. I have no clue how much money these adds can generate.[*]Offer the option to people to become a member for a small fee. This would give them HD space, and a hhplace.org e-mail address[*]Host the pictures on other (non commercial) servers. There are members (like myself) that have a cable/dsl connection to the internet and run their own server.[/list]So to make the long answer short, I'm giving these things a lot of thought. Somehow, someway it will materialize sometime.

My Mood: Rep Power: 45 | Those are all good options, apart from I'm not sure about the one about temp storage. Then after a while there would be broken links to the images if they were linked (?) which would not look too nice.
Having people pay for "extras" might be a good idea if they were prepared to. I personally don't think they would be, but I could be wrong on that. We could always ask the question in a thread on the board. |

Rep Power: 15 | Well, as per the membership thing, I don't think I'd be prepared to pay for that one:[*]I'm skint[*]How do you propose for a payment method? Credit card? I certainly can't do that (being 16 et al)
I have a server with unlimited space which people could ftp to, and then link to, if that would be of any use? Pretty good bandwidth too... and I can change the password so that it's freely available.

They are just some options I have in mind, not nescesarily the best ofcourse.
I have a server with unlimited space which people could ftp to, and then link to, if that would be of any use? Pretty good bandwidth too... and I can change the password so that it's freely available.
I also have my own server here, but the upstream bandwidth is limited to 128kbps and I think my provider would complain on the long term if traffic get's to high.
Do you have your server running 24/7 with not to much downtime? You wouldn't have to make your ftp public. I'm planning on programming a userfriendly upload possibility in PHP. The actual ftp-ing would then be done by some server-side code.

Rep Power: 15 | It's actually an ISP account I have with an ISP called PlusNet. I got in just before they stopped their unlimited space policy. If you could write the code, so that *nix does the ftp-ing via some php, that'd be cool, and I think that would be the best solution. I don't have a bandwidth limit (that I know of), and of course, being with an ISP, I get very little downtime with them

My Mood: Rep Power: 22 | I shall look through some of my old paperwork for the access codes for the unlimited webspace I have. If I can just remember were it is
The space should still be available as the dialup is still used by a friend. Whether or not it is server dependant is another question. As with so many free webspaces that offer large or unlimited capacity, the price to pay is often that you can only access the ftp through their own 0845 dialup.
But I shall check it when I find it and pass the details on to you Jeff. |

My Mood: Rep Power: 22 | Well I have confirmed that my unlimited webspace still exists That's the good news!
The bad is that it's only accessible for ftp uploading via an 0845 number What a git! Well I suppose that's one of the prices to pay. |
