Go to your profile page (click on it above the posting area on any page after you are logged in). At the bottom of the profile page is a section called Avatar Control. That explains how to add a picture.

Default [Query] Avatar size question

I figure this board is the closest to a "helpdesk", also because I don't see my question as a rant really.

I have looked into every part of the forum I can think of and still cannot seem to resolve this. I want my avatar to appear larger, not much, but so it is clearer. I read the "Edit Avatar" instructions and noted that "Note: The Maximum size of your custom image is 50 by 50 pixels or 30.00 KB (whichever is smaller)". So, no matter what I do to edit the photo I want as my avatar, or whether I upload from my PC or point to a URL, it's always 50 by 38 pixels and roughly 1.5 KB. I also noticed that several other avatars are larger than the 50 by 50 constraint. If this size constraint is the way it is for new avatars, then I'm okay with that. Just want to know.

Hi There Heelme

At the moment, this is how its set which is why you see those dimensions and file sizes.

Its still early days yet but I do forsee those dimensions and file size restrictions getting any bigger due to what happens when users add really odd size/shape avatars.

Like in the old forum when a users avatar would make the entire page go all bent out of shape so I am trying to keep things in a uniform fashion here just so that it all remains a constant and everybody can be on the same page in how the forum works and to allow room for growth at the same time.

Hope that helps...

Default Avatar size question

I have just realised how damn small 50x50 really is.......Sorry about that.

I have now changed the maximum avatar size for all members to 100px wide by 150px high and a file size limit of 10KB

10KB is more than big enough and there are only a small handful of members who have avatars bigger than this who may be hearing from me some time soon.

I am not trying to be horrible but am trying to keep the forum in a state where the pages still load quickly with all the features people like and having 10 posts, each with a 30KB avatar + images in the post makes things grind to a halt sometimes.

Oh, yeah -- that's more like it.

I completely understand the desire to keep avatars small -- big ones mess up the page layout and increase download time (which is still a concern for those of us who siphon our data down through a dialup line :-( On the old board, I had enabled my avatar about a week before it hit the wall and it looked like it imported here verbatim. The size was 144x110 -- within the size limit for the old board but significantly above the former 50x50 limit for this one. It looks like most everybody else's avatars imported at whatever size they were too.

Then I changed the image slightly -- re-composed and re-cropped it -- and immediately discovered that I could make it no bigger than 50x50! The icons on my desktop are bigger than that!

It is probably a good idea to set up the board to down-size avatars that are too big. That eliminates a recurring problem we had on the old board. I also think this new size limit is much more reasonable.

Thank you.

--speaking of avatars, can the heel-height post ranking be brought back? that was fun and so appropriate for this board.

JMC

Have another read of what I wrote as I corrected it after I posted it.
The avatar size limit is now 100x150 and 10KB

All the old avatars were imported and given some time, we will be reviewing the avatar situation, along with the post rankings situation too.

Me and the moderators will hopefully sort something out soon.

Ah, thank you! I was going to ask if it was possible to "upgrade" my avatar to a larger size, but now it won't be necessary.

Thanks for enlarging the default avatar size AND for adding a few more boards to the forum for assistance when needed. Very responsive and part of why I like this forum so much.
