Using my daily combination of Operating System and browser, I am unable to connect to the website. Changing to their respective counterparts at the Dark Side (grrr.....), I can connect without any problem. How come??

I already tried to change the user agent my browser reports into the one reported by the Infernal Exploder I am now using (YUCK!), but without any luck :( I also tried using several older browsers that I had used succesfully in the past, but also no joy (daily browser is Firefox 1.5.0.8, so modern enough I think). Also no possibility that the firewall is mucking things up. And the DNS servers from my ISP are aware of the existance of this site.

Whenever I will find enough time, I will have more than 3 months of postings to catch up with! (howdy Susan and Bubba, nice to see you posting again!)

well, I am using that version of web browser, so it is not the web site or the browser, what OS are you using?

I have also tested the site fully with Firefox (Multiple versions from 1.5+), internet explorer 6 and v7 and everything works just fine.

Let us know what setup you have though, including any software firewalls/security software as well as hardware if any...

There were several problems when the DNS was first changed where several members who were using some of the cheaper ISP's around europe had problems due to their ISP's DNS records not updating daily like most ISP's do and if your access to this website is intermittent then the fact that you have managed to make 1 post would indicate that the problem is most likely with your ISP, and not your own setup.

Problem solved! It turns out that in my HOSTS file www.hhplace.org was still pointing to the old IP from the previous ISP ... duh!

Tom -- are you referring to your local "/etc/hosts" file?

I was using the site for the last two days on my Linux box (Slackware 10.2 / Firefox 1.0.5.8 -- yeah I know it's time for an upgrade) without a hitch. Further, I have no entry for HHplace in my "hosts" file, rather I allow the nameserver to resolve that IP. The nameserver is specificed in "/etc/resolv.conf".

I'm sorry if this is getting too technical -- but it is the tech support thread.

Since it is working, you probably want to leave it alone -- but if the IP of this site (or any other site you use regularly)
should change again you will be faced with the same situation. The /etc/hosts file is really intended to specify fixed IP's of boxes on your local network only.

I am indeed talking about the HOSTS file at %ETC% . You are right, in that that file is only meant to resolve local adresses. I put it (and several others) in there, during a period when the name servers from my ISP were flaky and slow as molasses. That way I just skipped the DNS-lookup where things were hanging.

BTW: under my OS the name servers are specified in %ETC%/RESOLV2 .
