One day this past summer, I was out in my platform sandals (4.5" heel with 1.5" platform). I was wearing a short skirt all day so they were in plain sight. I didn't get a single compliment about them all day, but some people actually did come up to me to make negative remarks... along the lines of "Wow, those sure are high" (in a negative tone of voice that implied high = slutty), "Aren't you afraid you'll fall down and break something?" etc. I'd have welcomed a compliment over those remarks anytime.

As for what to say, I think dr1819's line is a good start. If someone came and said that to me, and then didn't pursue the matter any further (other than maybe to ask where I bought them), I wouldn't think it was a pickup line.

Women don't wear them for two reasons: One, they get grief from the female mafia. Two, because they can.

One can go anywhere (physically) in flat shoes but high heels are pretty much for show/fashion! For instance, thin high heels can be hazardous to one's health if on surfaces that are not smooth and hard.

Casual fashion is practical. People dress much more (comfortably) casually today than they did years ago. High heels get worn less as women dress down.

Likewise, men are wearing the stiff wingtip type dress shoe much less than they used to, trading them in for cushioned shoes designed for standing and walking.

This comment is not meant as a dig at Dr. Shoe, but it's just because I've heard this expression so many times.

If everything had to be practical before you'd wear it, you wouldn't much of a range of clothing to choose from. I see too many girls these day (and guys) wear shell suits or jeans/t-shirt with socks and trainers. Yuck! Even the non-chav types are wearing them. Too busy being practical and not enough imagination.

Mind you, I saw a guy get off a bus today looking pleased with himself because he was wearing a kilt. Must've been bloody cold though!
