Default Tribute to my Aunt

All,

As some of you know by now, my aunt passed away this weekend. What none of you know is how close we were or how special a lady she was. I would like to add this post as a tribute to her.

First of all, she got married at the ripe age of 18. 3 months later her new husband was called into action in Germany during WWII. He was soon killed in action while saving the life of a fellow soldier (the other guy didn't dig his foxhole correct so he gave him his and stayed out in the open when the Germans attacked). He got all the highest honors you can get as a soldier, but he left my aunt alone. Proving true love, she then spent the rest of her life (64years, she was 82 when she died!) dedicated to him. Not only never remarrying, she also never looked at another man again. He was the love of her life and she would be with him again someday (I can only imagine they are together right now). As a result, she also never had any kids.

Growing up, we lived in a duplex house (two houses built together and connected inside). I knew her all my life and saw her everyday from birth. I spent many hours at her house watching tv with her, sharing Sunday dinners, playing games. She was like a second mother to me even back then. She NEVER complained when my parents needed her to step in and baby sit one of us and truly enjoyed every minute of it. She was major influence in my life and the person I am today.

My mom died when I was 14 (going on 15) and my dad remarried. My dad never got along with my mom's side of the family (VERY long story not appropriate here) so I spent the next 3 years with no contact with her. After I graduated from High School my step mom threw me out of the house (we also never got along) and I stayed with my brother for the summer. Just before starting college, I re-established contact with her. Since I had no parental support in college, I had alot of money issues and had to work to support myself. Many times I got in financial trouble and needed money. My aunt not only gave me ANY money I needed at ANY time, she also sent me a monthly allowance. It is important to note she was NOT working and living off social security and pension from her husband. She had VERY little money herself yet made sure I had extra. She never asked for a cent back yet gave the money lovingly. I would have never made it through college without her support.

After I got married and had kids, we visited her often. With my mother long gone, she became a grandmother to my daughters and loved them as any could. Unfortunately she was starting to get up in years and wasn't as strong as she used to be. However, she lived in a single room apartment (with a kitchen and a bathroom) and cleaned it ALL herself, immaculately and cooked all of her own meals. About 2 years ago age caught up with her and she started having problems with falling alot. Her doctor was concerned about her living alone and felt it was best to put her in a nursing home.

The last time we visited, two months ago just after her 82nd birthday, part of her feistiness returned and she insisted I help her into a wheelchair so she could sit up during our visit instead of laying in bed. I could tell she wasn't all that well but she wasn't about to let that stop her.

She was truly a very special lady and much more than an aunt. I will miss her deeply and always remember her with deep fondness. I think tonight she is in heaven catching my mom up on everything and telling her all about her special granddaughters. I look forward to someday seeing her again.
