I don't know exactly when, but judging by where we were living at the time I must have been quite young, perhaps 7 or 8. My Mum had a lovely pair of stilettos in a sort of metallic green, with pointed toes. I don't know what height, but I think the standard height in those days was 21/2" or 3", perhaps equivalent to 4" or 41/2" the way they are measured nowadays. I used to slop around in them when they were much too big for me, then when I grew out of them I borrowed my sister's when she was away. Stilettos were right out of fashion when I was in my teens, but I usually managed to find some tucked away at the back of shops or in secondhand shops. Mum had some higher shoes too, but none with that wonderful slender heel, and I've loved stilettos ever since. |
