I have to believe this would be illegal in every state in the U.S. Not sure about the U.K. or other countries. At a minimum it would run afoul of defacing property, vandalism, destruction of property, and other ordinances. Save the "shoes were not damaged and no one knew" arguments - the jury will never buy them! Compare to taking your neighbors car and returning it unharmed or spray painting their house, then deciding better of it and washing it off. The attempt to "fix" the damage doesn't negate it.
I think this also offends everyones nature of good taste. It doesn't pass the "smell test" and I can't imagine anyone here is really advocating that it does.
