The first photo shows the desired thumb space under the toe of a boot with the correct heel height.

The next is what happens if you raise the heel too high. If you bend the shank to make the heel vertical, the toe will still be flat.

The last shows lowering the heel too much, now the toe is curled up too far.

I hope that explains it.
