Now what I have found is that the mfgr. of athletic shoes often use laces about twice as long as is really necessary. Therefore I simply cut the laces in half, which provides me a spare set of laces whenever one wears out. However, in lieu of a regular
aglet (which is typically a metal sleve that's crimped onto the lace) I have found that I can use a fairly stout thread and "whip" the ends of the laces in exactly the same way one would "whip" a rope. But for anyone who might seek to try this, I do recommend using needles, which will greatly facilitate passing the thread through the thread loops and otherwise positioning the thread. Also, it's usually a good idea to use a contrasting color, which makes it easier for the eye to follow. Also, this only works with fabric laces, don't try it with leather or some other material.
